Netherlands in Treaty with India for Healthcare Personnel, NN

Health Minister Edith Schippers expects that a treaty can shortly be signed between the Netherlands and India on the exchange of personnel such as nurses.

The minister is currently leading an economic mission of some 20 companies and institutions. She has discussed areas that are interesting for partnership including vaccinations, biotechnology and ICT in healthcare. She was not yet able to give details of the treaty.

Schippers sees big opportunities for Dutch companies in the Indian healthcare sector, currently estimated at about 50 billion euros. India is among the top three countries with the fastest-growing investments in this area.

The minister expects that the Netherlands can also advise India in the area of health insurance. Currently, almost nobody is insured here, but this will certainly come. The Netherlands has considerable expertise in this area, so if we can help here, we will certainly do so, and I will also let the authorities know this.î

In the area of research, India can also mean a lot for the Netherlands. India has a highly-educated population. There are also a high number of patients, which is good for research, Schippers said.

With her Indian counterpart Vilasrao Deshmukh in New Delhi, Schippers also discussed how the Netherlands can help India in the area of resistance to antibiotics. An important stumbling-block is data registration, something which is a strong point of the Netherlands, according to Schippers.
